Accountant

I AM ALS is a community-led organization with the revolutionary goal of changing ALS from fatal to chronic. We provide support and resources to those impacted by ALS; empower advocates to raise awareness; and lead the movement against ALS in driving the development of cures. Founded in 2019 by husband and wife team Brian Wallach and Sandra Abrevaya, I AM ALS was born out of their desire to rewrite the ALS story for Brian and the tens of thousands of other people with ALS.

We’re looking for a detail-oriented, proactive contract accountant to ensure operational excellence across our financial systems. This role is ideal for someone with strong accounting expertise who has comfort working autonomously, managing monthly close and reporting cycles, and interfacing with leadership, staff, and external vendors (e.g. auditors, payroll, retirement plan administrator).

You’ll lead our day-to-day bookkeeping, ensure fiscal accuracy and compliance, and contribute to monthly close, reporting, payroll, and audit prep. In this role you’ll report to the Chief of Staff and serve as a strategic thought partner and subject matter expert to build and maintain workflows that contribute to continual improvement of our financial management practices and health.

• 5+ years of nonprofit accounting experience
• Expert proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Excel, and Google Workspace
• Strong understanding of GAAP accounting and nonprofit financial management
• Familiarity with federal/state compliance, payroll systems, and benefits administration
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and communicate clearly with non-finance staff
• Comfort with a fast-paced, fully remote startup-style environment
